Choosing between PES, DST, HUS, JEF, EXP, VP3 and XXX? Start with your machine's exact model, not just its brand. The right extension is only one part of compatibility: design dimensions, hoop size, stitch limits and the transfer method matter too.
Quick machine-to-format guide
This is a format-family reference, not a guarantee for every model. Manufacturer documentation and embroidery-software format references were reviewed on November 1, 2026; no physical machine testing was performed. Software being able to open a format does not mean your machine can read it directly.
| Format | Machine family to investigate | Model-specific checks |
|---|---|---|
| PES (.pes) | Commonly associated with Brother and Baby Lock; also some Deco systems. | Confirm your model accepts PES and the file version supplied. Brother documents PES for specific machines, but that does not establish support for every model or every Baby Lock. |
| DST (.dst) | Tajima format, also accepted by some other commercial and home embroidery machines, including documented Brother models. | Not a universal fallback. Confirm direct DST support. DST does not carry specific thread-color information, so use the design's color chart and check the color-change sequence. |
| HUS (.hus) | Husqvarna Viking format family, often encountered in older design libraries. | Do not assume every Viking reads HUS. Your model may require VP3, VIP, SHV or another format or transfer workflow. Check its manual before choosing. |
| JEF (.jef) | Janome and many Elna embroidery systems. | Janome identifies JEF as a default stitch-data format. Check your exact model's hoop and stitch limits and USB/card folder instructions. JEF, JEF+ and JPX are not interchangeable labels. |
| EXP (.exp) | Melco and BERNINA USB embroidery workflows. | Confirm your machine's EXP requirements. For BERNINA USB workflows, keep supplied INF color and BMP preview companion files with the EXP file as instructed. A bare EXP file may display default rather than intended colors. |
| VP3 (.vp3) | Husqvarna Viking and PFAFF format families. | Check direct VP3 support for your specific model. Do not assume all Viking or PFAFF generations accept the same formats, or that VP3 and HUS can simply replace one another. |
| XXX (.xxx) | Compucon/Singer PSW format family. | A Singer association is not a promise for every Singer machine. Check the exact model manual; its required format and transfer workflow may differ. |
Before you buy or transfer a design
- Find your exact model number and check the embroidery-data section of its manual. Confirm supported formats, any format-version restrictions and the required transfer method.
- Check the individual product listing for the formats and design sizes actually included. This guide does not mean every Embrobuy download includes all seven formats.
- Match the design's stitch dimensions to your machine's usable embroidery area and supported hoop. A hoop's outside dimensions are not its stitching area; a supported extension does not make an oversized design fit.
- Unzip the download on your computer and transfer the supported embroidery file, not the ZIP archive. Follow your model's USB, folder, card or wireless instructions and preserve required companion files.
- Preview the design on your machine or compatible embroidery software. Check orientation, dimensions, color order and stitch count. Renaming an extension does not convert a file; use compatible conversion software if needed and recheck the result.
Test before stitching your project
Run a test stitch-out on scrap using the same fabric type, stabilizer, thread and needle planned for the finished item. Check registration, tension, density and color sequence before using your final garment. Re-test after conversion or resizing; a file that loads successfully is not proof of a good stitch-out.
Find a design to try
Browse the Free Designs Starter Pack for a practice option, explore Bestsellers, or compare Design Bundles. Check each listing's included files and sizes before downloading or purchasing, even when a design is free.
Still unsure? Have your machine's exact brand and model, supported hoop size and the design you want ready when asking for help. A brand name alone is not enough to confirm compatibility.
